President of the Generalitat of Catalonia 1980-2003
Jordi Pujol i Soley was born in Barcelona on June 9th 1930 and was a Catalan politician, who was President of the Generalitat of Catalonia from 1980 to 2003.
He became involved in Catalanist politics during the Franco period and spent two years in prison after arrested by the regime following what is known as the Events of the Palau in 1960.
He founded Convergència Democrà tica de Catalunya in 1974 and became President of the Generalitat in the first elections to the Parliament of Catalonia on May 8th1980.
After his retirement in 2003, it was expected that he would live the life of an elderly Catalan statesman but he disgraced himself in 2014, when he admitted to having undeclared money in bank accounts in Andorra and other countries.
