Gràcia Nova and Ca l’Alegre de Dalt
The Camp d’en Grassot was once an area of farms and craftsmen making tiles located on the borders between Gràcia and the part of Barcelona that would later become the Sagrada Familia neighbourhood in the Eixample.
In the 1860s, the farm owners began building on the land and one of the largest landowners was Jeroni Grassot.
The main streets of this original urbanisation, such as Passatge d’Alió or Carrer d’en Grassot, still exist.
The most important building in this part of the neighbourhood is the old Sedeta silk factory, which was built in 1899 and was still in use until 1976.
This was one of the many factories that took advantage of the underground water supply in the area and in 1978, it was acquired by the Ajuntament and converted into a community centre and school.
The section of the neighbourhood above Carrer Pi i Margall is known as Ca l’Alegre de Dalt, which is slightly more modern than the rest of Camp d’en Grassot, and includes the shopping and commercial area known as Gràcia Nova.
At the very edge of the neighbourhood on Carrer de les Camèlies, football fans will want to make a pilgrimage to the Nou Sardenya Stadium, home to Gràcia’s CE Europa, who were founded in 1907 and one of the founding members of La Liga in 1928.
