Events

1250 – Xàtiva, Kingdom of València: King Jaume I concedes the privilege of organising a trade fair to the town.

1285 – Girona: Combat de Santa Maria, an episode in the Crusade against the Crown of Aragon at the gates of the city. The Catalano-Aragonese troops flee in the face of the French attack.

1304 – THe Almogàvers commanded by Roger de Flor beat a very superior Turkish force at the Battle of Kibistra (also known as the Battle of the Mountains of Taure) to the cry of Deperta Ferro! or Iron Awake!

1901 
– Alaró, Mallorca: electric light arrives to the island for the first time.

1879 – Sabadell: Josep Masllovet i Sanmiquel, Catalan musician and composer (died 1946).

1920 – València: Vicente Aguilera Cerni, Valencian art critic and essayist (died 2005).

1971 – Viena (Àustria): Joan Prat i Esteve, known as Armand Obiols, Catalan writer, journalist and literary critic (born 1904).

1983 – Sabadell (Vallès Occidental): Miquel Crusafont i Pairó, Catalan paleontologist (born 1910).

1997 – París (França): Roc Llop i Convalia, Catalan trades unionist and writer (born 1908).

2011 – Barcelona: Joaquim Maluquer i Sostres, Catalan sociologist and ornithologist, Creu de Sant Jordi in 1996 (born 1930).

2015 – Beniarbeig, Alacant: Rafael Chirbes, Valencia writer, who wrote in Spanish, and literary critic (born 1949).
